Environmental Toxicology
in the laboratory of environmental toxicology a multidisciplinary toolbox of microbiology, ecotoxicology, in vitro cell cultures, molecular biology and analytical chemistry is applied to study the safety of different chemicals, engineered nanoparticles and environmental samples.
The Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology, KTL (formerly the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, name changed on 23 November 2012), headed by Dr. Anne Kahru, conducts research within the framework of the KBFI strategic programs ‘In vitro toxicology and 3R’, ‘Environmental Chemistry’ and ‘Macromolecular Interactions’.
In addition to basic research, attention is also paid to applied research aimed at implementing research results in the environment and/or health care. As a result of the high level and international recognition of the research work of KTL scientists, they participate in several EU and other international cooperation projects and cooperation networks.
Close cooperation between KBFI and researchers from Tallinn University of Technology, University of Tartu and Estonian University of Life Sciences is reflected in the co-supervision of graduate students and their involvement in KBFI research projects.
The renovation of the KBFI KTL laboratory building and the renewal of scientific equipment in 2006 will ensure even better research conditions in the fields of molecular biology, microbiology, cell cultures, microbial biotechnology and ecotoxicology.
Since top researchers with a background in chemistry, biochemistry and physics are also located under the same roof, together with the infrastructure of the corresponding research area, KBFI has good opportunities for effective cooperation at the borders of different scientific fields.
